Frequently Asked Questions

What is Muay Thai?

Muay Thai (or Thai Boxing) is the National Sport of Thailand & is often referred to by the moniker ‘The Art of 8 Limbs’ as it uses punches kicks, knees & elbows in it’s arsenal, along with sweeps & clinching (standing grappling). Widely considered one of the most complete striking arts & rich with cultural history, Muay Thai is a great entry point whether you want to get in shape, compete or supplement your existing skill set. Come Train!

Do I need experience?

Not at all! Songbird operates similar to a traditional Thai Camp where brand new practictioners train alongside fighters. We welcome those new to the art & those who’ve trained for years. We believe this model builds confidence, community and fosters the sort of environment we can all be proud of. Our group classes are a great place to start, additionally, we offer 1-on-1 & small group training via Northeast Community Center for members looking to concentrate on a specific area, or accelerate their progress. We look forward to seeing you!

Do I need to be in shape?

While Thai Boxing is very physical, the best way to get in shape is by doing! We’ll work hard, have fun & and are here to support you along the way.

What can I expect?

While our day to day focus might change, you can expect lots of conditioning, heavy bag work,Thai pad rounds, partner drilling & more! We occasionally partake in ‘timing sparring’ (very technical & controlled) during class, but hard sparring is strictly for those preparing for competition and is both closely monitored & purpose driven (to elevate the students ring generalship & fight IQ)

What will I need to bring?

To start, comfortable clothing and a great attitude. We have loaner gear on hand for your first few classes. If you plan to continue: Shin Guards, Boxing Gloves (16oz) Fitted Mouthpiece, Elbow Pads, Thai Shorts & Protective Cup. People often purchase their own set of Thai Pads and Belly Pad as they become more invested, but we’ll always have those on hand at the gym to utilize during class.
